Henry Johnston, born in 1997, began studying guitar at the age of 6 with his father, Alan Johnston. In 2009 he won second place in the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Guitar Competition, in the junior division. In April of 2011, Henry performed at the Fitzgerald Theatre in his hometown of St Paul, Minnesota as one of five winners of MN Varsity, Minnesota Public Radio’s 1st annual competition for young classical singers and instrumentalists. Later that same month, Henry became the youngest guitarist ever to win first prize in the Schubert Club Competition in St. Paul, at the age of 14. In 2013, Henry was a finalist in the senior division of the Guitar Foundation of America International Competition in Louisville, KY and in September of that year, he appeared on NPR’s “From the Top,” broadcast from the National Music Museum in Vermillion, SD. He has won top prizes in numerous international competitions, including first prize in the Texas A&M International Guitar Competition in October of 2016, second prize in the Florida Guitar Foundation guitar competition in March of 2017, and later that same year second prize at the Indiana Classical Guitar Competition, among others. In April of 2018, he was selected by the University of Texas System Board of Regents as a recipient of the Regents’ Outstanding Student Awards in Arts and Humanities. During the summer of 2019, he was invited to participate in the Aspen Summer Music Festival in Aspen, Colorado. Henry’s past teachers include Alan Johnston, John Holmquist, and Judicael Perroy. He is an active chamber musician and has performed frequently with the MacPhail Guitar Quartet, which has been featured on television and radio. Henry currently resides in Austin, Texas where he studies under Adam Holzman at the University of Texas. He usually plays a guitar made by the French luthier Hugo Cuvilliez.

Minstrels is the final prelude from Debussy’s first book of preludes for piano, written between December 1909 and February 1910. The score was unique in that the title of each movement was not written at the top of the score, before the first measure, but at the very end below the last. In this way, the interpreter was led to experience the music for themself, unaware of the composer’s title until the end of each movement. The piece was transcribed for guitar by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. His manuscript is dated January 30th, 1951, and is dedicated to Andres Segovia.
